What it is

GPT is OpenAI's family of large language models. As of September 2026 the current generation is GPT-6: GPT-6 Astra (announced 4 September 2026, the top tier for maximum capability), plus GPT-6 Sol (mid tier) and GPT-6 Luna (budget tier), both introduced on 22 September 2026. The models take text and images in and write text out, and they power ChatGPT as well as the OpenAI API.

Where you can use it

The GPT-6 models run inside ChatGPT (Luna for Free and Go users, Sol for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise). On the API they are available directly and through automation tools: n8n's OpenAI nodes, Make's OpenAI (ChatGPT, Whisper) app and Zapier's ChatGPT (OpenAI) app. Fiction tools such as Novelcrafter connect to GPT models through your own OpenAI or OpenRouter key.

Pricing and rights

API list prices per million tokens (September 2026): GPT-6 Astra $10 input / $50 output, GPT-6 Sol $2 / $10, GPT-6 Luna $0.10 / $0.50. In ChatGPT, the cheapest paid plan is Go at about $8 per month (reported by several pricing trackers; OpenAI's own pricing page blocked our fetch), Plus is $20. Under OpenAI's terms you own the text you generate.

Verdict

GPT-6 is a strong default for writing work, and the new Sol and Luna prices make bulk content cheaper than a year ago. The flagship Astra tier is costly on the API, and closed weights mean you depend entirely on OpenAI's platform and policy changes.
