What is Microsoft Copilot?
What it is
Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant. The free Copilot app runs on the web, Windows, Mac, iOS and Android; paid Microsoft 365 consumer plans put Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook with higher usage, image generation and agent features.
Key features
- Free chat with GPT-5 at copilot.microsoft.com and in the Copilot apps
- Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook on Microsoft 365 plans
- Image generation, with higher allowances on Premium and Pro
- AI-generated audio (English) on paid plans
- Agentic tasks and advanced research on Premium (limited) and Pro (highest)
- Content credentials on Copilot creations, which the terms forbid you to remove
Models inside
Microsoft says free Copilot runs OpenAI's GPT-5. Microsoft's business Copilot products also offer Anthropic Claude and newer GPT models, and PowerPoint image generation can route to GPT-Image or Flux, but Microsoft does not document a model picker for the consumer app, so only GPT is listed here.
Pricing and rights
As of September 2026 (US): free Copilot with capacity limits. Microsoft 365 Personal $9.99/month ($99.99/year), Family $12.99/month ($129.99/year, AI for the subscription owner only), Premium $19.99/month ($199.99/year) and Pro $99.99/month (monthly only). Microsoft does not claim ownership of your content, but the consumer Copilot terms state that you can only use Copilot for your own personal use and that Microsoft cannot promise responses won't infringe others' rights. Businesses should look at Microsoft 365 Copilot business plans instead.
Who it is for
People who already live in Word, PowerPoint and Outlook and want AI help drafting documents, decks and emails without another subscription. If you create content for clients or a business, budget for a business Copilot licence instead.
Verdict
Copilot is convenient if you pay for Microsoft 365 anyway, and the free app gives GPT-5 at no cost. For commercial content work the personal-use clause in the consumer terms is a real limitation, and usage limits are vague.
Pros
- Free Copilot app runs GPT-5 on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android
- Paid Microsoft 365 plans put Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
- Bundles Office apps and 1 TB+ storage with the AI features
- Microsoft 365 Family covers up to 6 people (AI for the owner only)
Cons
- Consumer terms say you can only use Copilot for your own personal use
- Usage levels are described vaguely ("higher", "extensive") rather than as numbers
- Agentic features are limited below the $99.99 Pro tier
- No transparent model choice in the consumer app
