About GPT Image 2.5
What it is
GPT Image is OpenAI's native image generation and editing model. GPT Image 2.5 (branded ChatGPT Images 2.5) launched on 8 September 2026, five months after GPT Image 2 (21 April 2026). On the API it ships in two variants: Flare, tuned for speed, and Sunburst, tuned for detail.
Key features
- Output up to 4K, with new xhigh and max quality tiers
- Up to 16 reference images, and better preservation of subjects from your photos
- Text rendering accurate enough for posters, menus, infographics and YouTube thumbnails
- Multi-turn and comment-based edits that keep earlier changes intact
- Sketch-to-image, and about 50% lower latency than Images 2.0 according to OpenAI
Where you can use it
In ChatGPT (all users get the instant mode; the thinking mode is for paid plans), ChatGPT Work and Codex, and on the OpenAI API. Third-party apps that document GPT Image models: Krea (GPT Image 2.5 Flare and Sunburst), Picsart, Higgsfield, OpenArt (GPT Image 1.5), Adobe Firefly (GPT Image 1.5 as a partner model), ComfyUI partner nodes and Zapier's ChatGPT (OpenAI) app.
Pricing and rights
API prices per million tokens: gpt-image-2.5-sunburst and gpt-image-2 $5 input / $30 output; gpt-image-1-mini $2 / $8. Batch jobs are 50% off. ChatGPT Free includes image generation with limits; the cheapest paid plan, Go, is about $8 per month (third-party figure, OpenAI's pricing page blocked our fetch) and Plus is $20. OpenAI's terms assign you ownership of outputs. For provenance, OpenAI attaches C2PA metadata and adds Google DeepMind's SynthID invisible watermark across ChatGPT, Codex and the API.
Who it is for
Marketers, YouTubers and designers who need images with correct text, quick product edits and consistent subjects across a series.
Verdict
GPT Image 2.5 is one of the most capable general image models for content work, especially text-heavy graphics and iterative edits. It is closed, policy-restricted, and the high quality tiers get expensive on the API.
Pros
- Up to 4K output and up to 16 reference images for edits
- Reliable text rendering for posters, infographics and thumbnails
- Multi-turn editing keeps earlier changes consistent
- Outputs carry C2PA metadata and SynthID watermarks
Cons
- API output tokens cost $30 per million on GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst
- Thinking mode (web search, layout reasoning) is limited to paid ChatGPT plans
- Content policy blocks many real-person and brand requests
- Closed model: no local or fine-tuned use
