What it is

Midjourney is an independent AI lab's image generator, used on its own website and in Discord. You type a prompt and get a grid of images in Midjourney's recognisable house style. The current default model is V8.2 (July 2026), and the same subscription also animates stills into short video clips.

Models inside

Only Midjourney's own models: V8.2 by default, with V8.1, V7, V6 and older versions still selectable with --v. There are no third-party models.

Pricing and rights

As of September 2026 there is no free plan or trial. Basic is $10 a month (3.3 fast GPU hours), Standard $30 (15 hours plus unlimited Relax images), Pro $60 (30 hours, Stealth Mode, unlimited Relax video) and Mega $120 (60 hours). Annual billing takes 20% off ($8, $24, $48, $96 a month). Extra fast time costs $4 an hour. All paid plans come under Midjourney's General Commercial Terms. A company with more than $1M gross revenue a year must be on Pro or Mega. Unless you pay for Pro or Mega and turn on Stealth Mode, everything you make is public in the gallery. Midjourney offers no IP indemnity.

Who it is for

Illustrators, art directors, concept artists and marketers who care most about how an image looks, and who are happy to explore and iterate rather than follow a strict brief.

Verdict

Midjourney still produces some of the most polished, stylised images on the market, and V8 made it faster and sharper. You get only one model family, no free tier and no team workspaces. Private generation also costs $60 a month, which is a real drawback for client work.
