What is Udio?
What it is
Udio is a US AI music generator, founded by former Google DeepMind researchers, that makes songs with vocals from text prompts. After settling with Universal Music Group (October 2025) and Warner Music Group (November 2025), and signing deals with Merlin (January 2026) and Kobalt (April 2026), Udio is rebuilding as a licensed creation, listening and remix platform. Sony Music is still suing.

Models inside
Udio runs its own models only. It has said the current model will be retired during 2026 when the licensed service launches. As of September 2026 no launch date had been confirmed.
Pricing and rights
As of September 2026 you can generate music on Udio, but you can't download audio, video or stems on any plan. Downloads were switched off on 30 October 2025 as part of the UMG settlement, and there's no date for their return. The pricing page couldn't be read directly. A March 2026 review lists Free (10 daily credits plus 100 monthly, non-commercial), Standard at $10/month (2,400 credits) and Pro at $30/month (6,000 credits). The commercial rights attached to paid plans are of little use while you can't export files.
Who it is for
Hobbyists who want to experiment and share songs inside Udio's community, and people waiting to see what the licensed platform offers.
Verdict
Udio's generation quality was strong, but today it's a closed platform: nothing you make can leave the app. Unless you only want to create and listen in-app, look at alternatives until the licensed relaunch arrives and its download and rights terms are published.
