What is Stable Audio?
What it is
Stable Audio is Stability AI's hosted app (stableaudio.com) for generating instrumental music, loops and sound effects from text prompts or audio input. The same model family is available through Stability's API and, since Stable Audio 3.0, as open weights for self-hosting.
Key features
- Text-to-music and text-to-sound-effects, up to 3 minutes per track in the app
- Audio-to-audio: transform an uploaded clip in a new style
- Stem export on paid plans
- Consistent loops, textures and cues for video, games and ads
- Developer API priced per credit, plus open-weight 3.0 Small and Medium models
Models inside
The hosted app runs Stable Audio 2.5 (September 2025). Stable Audio 3.0 (May 2026) is a separate open-weight family, with compositions up to about 6 minutes 20 seconds. Stability says 2.x was trained on the licensed AudioSparx catalogue and names partnerships with Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group for 3.0. Every model makes instrumentals and sound effects only, with no sung vocals.
Pricing and rights
The pricing page loads only in a browser. A recent independent review lists these September 2026 plans: Free (about 10 generations a month, 30-second tracks, personal and non-commercial only), Pro $11.99/month (250 generations), Studio $29.99 (675) and Max $89.99 (2,250). Paid tiers include commercial rights under Stability's Creator licence. The API costs $0.01 per credit. Open weights are free to self-host for organisations with under $1M in annual revenue; larger ones need an Enterprise licence.
Who it is for
Video editors, game developers and sound designers who need royalty-safe background music, loops and effects rather than full vocal songs.
Verdict
Stable Audio is a sensible choice when legal clarity matters: training data is licensed and paid plans are commercial. It can't sing, and the free tier is too short for real work, so it's for instrumentals and sound design rather than song creation.
Pros
- Trained on licensed audio (AudioSparx; label partnerships for 3.0)
- Commercial Creator licence on all paid tiers
- Sound effects and loops as well as music
- Open-weight 3.0 models for self-hosting
Cons
- Instrumental only, no vocals
- Free tier limited to short, non-commercial clips
- Plan figures come from a third-party review; the pricing page needs JavaScript
- Organisations over $1M revenue need an Enterprise licence for open weights
