NovelAI is a subscription service for AI-assisted storytelling and anime-style image generation, run by Anlatan. You write interactively with its text models, which continue your story, and generate illustrations with its own NovelAI Diffusion image models. It also offers text-to-speech.

As of September 2026: Paper is a free trial with 50 text generations, 30 images (up to 1024x1024) and 100 text-to-speech generations. Tablet costs $10/month with unlimited text and TTS and 1,000 Anlas a month. Scroll costs $15/month with a larger context and 1,000 Anlas. Opus costs $25/month with the largest context, exclusive models, 10,000 Anlas and free image generation within set limits (single images, 28 steps or fewer, normal size, V4.5 or lower). Unused subscription Anlas are lost when you cancel. NovelAI says you have complete freedom to use your AI anime art as you wish, with no commercial restrictions on any tier.

Who it is for

Hobby fiction writers, interactive-story and roleplay fans and anime illustrators who want unlimited private generation for a flat fee. It is less suited to authors who need polished manuscripts for publication.

Verdict

NovelAI gives unlimited story generation and a capable anime image model for a flat fee, with generous usage rights. Its own text models are weaker than frontier assistants for plotting whole novels, and the image model is narrow in style.
