What it is

Microsoft Designer is Microsoft's AI graphic design app. It turns a text description into social posts, invitations, greeting cards, stickers, collages and framed photos, and it edits images with generative tools. It runs on the web and inside the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, and its image features also appear in Word and PowerPoint through Copilot.

As of September 2026 you can use Designer for free with a Microsoft account, with a monthly allowance of AI credits. Microsoft 365 Personal ($9.99 a month or $99.99 a year), Family ($12.99 a month) and Premium ($19.99 a month) include Designer with more monthly AI credits and Copilot in the Office apps. AI features are only for the subscription owner and can't be shared, and usage limits apply. The product page does not set out commercial-use terms for outputs, so check Microsoft's service agreement before using Designer images in paid campaigns.

Who it is for

Microsoft 365 households and small offices who want quick invitations, cards and social graphics, or images for documents and slides, without learning a design tool.

Verdict

Designer is a convenient, low-cost extra for Microsoft 365 users, with a free entry point. It is not a serious design tool: you can't choose the model, the templates are limited, and the published details on credits and commercial rights are vague.
