What is MarketMuse?
What it is
MarketMuse is a content strategy platform built on patented topic-modelling technology. Rather than a single-page editor, it looks at a whole topic: what you already cover, where the gaps are, which pages to update and what a comprehensive article should contain. It produces content briefs, strategy documents and optimisation guidance.
Key features
- Topic Navigator, keyword and SERP analysis tools
- Content briefs (up to 9 brief types on Strategy)
- Tracked topics for monitoring coverage over time
- Strategy documents for planning content inventories
- Proprietary topic models rather than generic LLM prompts
Models inside
MarketMuse says it relies on proprietary data and AI with patented topic modelling. It does not name third-party language models.
Pricing and rights
There is a Free plan (1 user, 10 queries a month, no briefs or tracked topics). Paid tiers are Optimize (100 queries, 5 briefs a month), Research (3 users, unlimited queries, 10 briefs) and Strategy (5 users, 20 briefs, all brief types). The pricing page shows no prices: every paid plan goes through "Book a demo", so price_from is left empty. Output rights are not discussed on the pricing page.
Who it is for
Content strategists and larger publishers planning topical authority across hundreds of pages, rather than writers who need a draft today. It suits teams with an editor or strategist who will turn briefs into articles, and publishers auditing a large back catalogue to decide what to refresh, merge or prune. Writers who only need on-page guidance for one article at a time will get more from a cheaper editor, and anyone wanting AI drafts should look elsewhere, because MarketMuse's value is in the planning layer rather than generation.
Verdict
MarketMuse is strongest at planning what to write and update across a site. It is opaque on price, sales-led, and brief allowances are small for the money, so small teams will usually find Surfer, Frase or NeuronWriter more practical.
Pros
- Site-wide topic and gap analysis
- Detailed content briefs
- Free plan for trying the research tools
- Proprietary topic models
Cons
- No public prices; demo required
- Few briefs per month on paid tiers
- Steeper learning curve
- Not a drafting tool
